Minolta Introduces the New DiMAGE Xt Biz Digital Camera (07/30/01)
Digital Camera and Software Package Delivers Excellent Images for Business ApplicationsRAMSEY, N.J. - July 30, 2003--Minolta Corporation introduces the new Minolta DiMAGE Xt Biz - a digital camera and software package specifically designed for modern business use and personal communication. The Minolta DiMAGE Xt Biz, based on the popular DiMAGE Xt digital camera, is the first Minolta digital camera to produce high quality images, image annotation, audio annotation, image validation and text capture for effective business communications. Among the value-added benefits to business users, the DiMAGE Xt Biz is designed to capture images used for effective documentation. It is ideal for use in law enforcement, real estate, insurance, recording conference room white board meeting notes and documenting trade show displays via multiple image and/or audio links.
The DiMAGE Xt Biz digital camera comes bundled with the new Minolta DiMAGE Biz Software. DiMAGE Biz Software for PC users allows text annotation, image annotation and audio annotation to be linked to any image file. DiMAGE Biz Software, when used in conjunction with the DiMAGE Xt Biz digital camera, also allows users such as law enforcement agents or insurance agents to validate an image file, allowing them to be able to prove that an image has not been altered or tampered with. If even one pixel has been changed a warning will appear. In addition, when a picture of text on a whiteboard or white paper flipchart is taken with the DiMAGE Xt Biz camera, the DiMAGE Biz software processes that image for clear viewing, allows the user to crop out unwanted frame and chalk rails and adjust perspective for off-axis shots."The new DiMAGE Xt Biz digital camera is an ideal business communications tool as well as an easy to use and fun camera for the weekends," said Jon Sienkiewicz, vice president of marketing, Minolta Corporation's Consumer Products Group. "By easily linking images with text and audio notes, an ordinary business meeting or trade show turns into an extraordinarily well-documented event. Or users can slip this digital camera into their pockets to photograph their vacation."
The new Minolta DiMAGE Xt Biz digital camera allows users to highlight specific details on a recorded image and then link subsequent images or voice memos as references or comments. Up to ten separate images or audio files can be linked to the original image. When the original image is opened into the DiMAGE Biz Software application on a PC, the related images and voice memos are loaded into the software's comment area and are linked to the area marquees in the original image.
DiMAGE Biz Software makes it simple to transfer data from the DiMAGE Xt Biz digital camera to a PC. Image and audio files recorded with the camera are automatically converted from JPEG and WAVE to the .mdm annotation file format. Annotation files can also be saved in HTML and emf formats allowing them to be shared in common office applications. Images of text or line art can be corrected with DiMAGE Biz Software's advanced image-processing tools. Contrast and color can be improved and perspective control can straighten images that were taken at an angle. The DiMAGE Biz Software's security tag can show if the original image data was changed or not providing even greater flexibility by ensuring there was no fraudulent tampering of data in the digital image files.
About the DiMAGE Xt Biz Digital Camera
Minolta Corporation's new extremely thin and compact DiMAGE Xt Biz is a 3.2 megapixel digital camera. Similar to the stylish and award-winning Minolta DiMAGE Xi, the DiMAGE Xt Biz features the world's fastest start-up time of any digital camera with an optical zoom lens, Minolta's image-processing technology, CxProcess, a 3x optical zoom lens, 4x digital zoom and an even smaller and thinner camera body than the DiMAGE Xi.
The contoured new vertically oriented design of the DiMAGE Xt Biz eliminates more than 5% from the size, nearly 8% from the weight and offers nearly a half-second reduction in start-up time compared to its predecessor DiMAGE Xi. At 3.4 x 2.6 x 0.8 in. and 4.2 oz., the DiMAGE Xt Biz can be placed as easily as a wallet into a pocket or briefcase. The exclusive folded optical zoom system allowed Minolta to recreate the world's thinnest(a), compact, planar digital camera with a 3x optical zoom. An optional Marine Case is available when the camera needs to be used in harsh environments or withstand abuse at construction sites or industrial locations. The case is water tight down to a depth of 100 feet.

Ritz Camera Centers First to Nationally Launch Fully Digital Single-Use Camera (07/29/03)
Partnership with Pure Digital Technologies Delivers High-Quality, 100% Digital Photography at a Single-Use PriceBELTSVILLE, Md., July 29 - Ritz Camera Centers, the largest retail camera and photo chain in the United States, today announced the nationwide launch of the Dakota Digital Single-Use Camera at select Ritz Camera and Wolf Camera locations. The cameras, a first to offer consumers a high-quality, fully digital experience at a single-use price, will sell for $10.99 under the company's Dakota Digital brand.
The Dakota Digital Single-Use Camera, built on the Pure Digital(TM) Imaging Platform, gives consumers the exciting benefits of digital photography without the associated cost and complexity. The easy-to-use camera offers functions normally associated with sophisticated digital cameras, including the ability to delete unwanted pictures, a fully automatic flash, metered exposure control, and a self-timer feature. Processing is made simple by returning the camera to any of the Ritz Camera or Wolf Camera locations for film-quality 4 x 6 DigiPrints "in minutes" and a photo CD. Now with a click of the mouse, even the novice computer users can email pictures, create photo greetings, or send multiple photos as a slideshow. Each camera is fully recycled after processing.
"The Dakota Digital Single-Use Camera is the easy and affordable answer to digital photography without giving up prints," noted David Ritz, Chairman of Ritz Camera Centers. "This worry-free digital camera is a perfect choice to capture the moments of summer or for anyone interested in trying digital for the first time."
"This new digital single-use camera addresses the two fastest growing segments of the consumer photography market," said Michelle Slaughter, director of InfoTrends Research Group's digital photography trends service. "In addition, the digital single-use camera provides Ritz's customers with the experience of in-store digital photo printing, which will contribute to establishing a behavior for printing digital photos at retail."
According to the Photo Marketing Association, single-use cameras sales have grown over 15% annually for the last five years, even as film sales have declined. Single-use cameras now represent over 19% of film rolls processed. Digital cameras sales have grown 23% over the past year and are expected to be present in almost 30% of US homes by year's end. Despite the increasing popularity of digital, less than 19% of digital pictures are printed, primarily due to the complexity, cost, and time requirements of home printing.
The Dakota Digital Single-Use Camera is available beginning July 28th at Ritz Camera and Wolf Camera locations in more than 14 cities, including Washington, Baltimore, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and Dallas.

NIKON COOLPIX 5400 CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE SAMPLES POSTED (07/27/03)
Today we are posting sample pictures from the Nikon Coolpix 5400 taken last weekend out at Disney's California Adventure. Once again we are quite pleased with the outdoor Auto white balance, and the pictures appear very bright, well exposed, well focused and colorful. We do not see any lack of sharpness in these images and like the default sharpness level Nikon has chosen to use, although the default setting may be slightly less aggressive than other cameras, which can be seen on occasion to be slightly over-sharpened. Overall, we find the image results to be consistently very good to excellent in outdoor settings, and we like the colorful results the Coolpix 5400 provides. We will have one final set from Disneyland later this week, shot the same day, but for now check out the results we obtained from the Coolpix 5400, in these unaltered shots from California Adventure.

SONY ANNOUNCES NEW DIGICAM COLOR TECHNOLOGY (07/16/03)
Sony Japan has just posted a press release announcing a new 4 color CCD filter and Matrix color processor technology which Sony will be using in upcoming digital cameras "in the near future!" The press report indicates that Sony will be changing from the traditional Bayer pattern of Red, Green, Blue & Green colors to filter the light hitting the CCD, and instead will use a Red, Green, Blue and Emerald arrangement. The Emerald color is a blue-green type of color and is aimed at providing better color fidelity, including rendering more accurate reds, blue-greens and overall white balance. Sony briefly explains how the new pattern allows colors that will better match how the human eye sees naturally and overcomes some limitations the old Bayer Pattern has demonstated. The press release also discusses the new CCD processor designed for use with the 4 color filter, and indicates it will use 30% less power consumption and is more efficient for burst mode captures and playback etc...
This looks very exciting and promising in furthering the ability of digital cameras to capture realistic images. We hope to have more information on this in the near future, but for now here is the text of the press release and a link to the Sony Japan Web site with more information.
Technology Development
No. 03-029E
July 16th, 2003Realization of natural color reproduction in Digital Still Cameras, closer to the natural sight perception of the human eye
Technology development to realize 4-color filter CCD and New Image Processor, achieving halving of color reproduction error
(Tokyo, Japan) - Sony Corporation today announced the world's first practical consumer (home) use of CCD with 4-color (Red <R>, Green <G>, Blue <B> + Emerald <E>) filters, together with a new image processor corresponding to the 4-color filter. By this technology, the color reproduction error is halved compared to Sony's conventional 3-primary-color filter CCD and, expression of images closer to the natural sight perception of the human eye is achieved under various shooting conditions.
![]()
3-color filters 4-color filters Conventional digital still cameras mainly use 3-primary-color filter CCD, and the colors are recorded by the intensity of each of the 3 colors, Red(R), Green(G) and Blue(B), corresponding to the color reproduction characteristics of the color TV or monitors. However, the characteristics of these CCD filters are different from those of the human visual system. Color differences therefore emerge compared to natural human sight, resulting in different color reproduction.
In the 4-color filter CCD, a filter with the Emerald (E) color is added to the conventional 3-color RGB filter, in order to reduce the color reproduction errors and to record natural images closer to the natural sight perception of the human eye. As a result, the characteristics of the CCD color filter become much closer to those of the human visual system, achieving dramatic reduction in the color reproduction error.
In addition to the development of the 4 color filter, a new image processor corresponding to the 4-color filter has been developed. With this processor, each of the signals captured by the 4 colors is processed to produce ideal 3 colors close to the natural sight perception the human eye by a matrix calculation. Also, in addition to functioning with 30% less power consumption, by the efficient processor management, functions such as high-speed image shooting and high-speed playback are realized, as well as enhancing the of overall basic functions of digital still cameras.
By the combination of the 4 color filter CCD and the new processor, color reproduction errors have been minimized by half, and the reproduction of blue-green and red colors has been particularly enhanced.

MORE NIKON COOLPIX 5400 SAMPLES POSTED (07/06/03)
Today we are posting 24 more unaltered sample images from the new Nikon Coolpix 5400, a full featured 5 megapixel camera which is competing with the new Canon G5, the Sony V1 and several other cameras such as the Olympus 5050 which use the same 5 megapixel CCD. These latest pictures were taken out at Downtown Disneyland in the late afternoon on two separate days this past week. Given the late afternoon start we did not yet take the Nikon Coolpix 5400 into either Disneyland or California Adventure as the shots and angle of the sun would be too different from our prior galleries. However, we continue to have very nice sunny weather and so we do hope to complete our testing of the Nikon CP 5400 out at Disneyland today. These current shots we are posting once again show a very impressive daytime white balance response, and we continue to be impressed with the way the CP 5400 handles highlights, as these shooting conditions involved very bright and late afternoon warm or yellowish sun conditions with deep shadows in many instances, and yet the camera does a great job overall! Although many have doubted the visible benefits of Sony's use of 14 bit digital to analog converters in many of its high end cameras, the Nikon Coolpix 5400 is the first Nikon camera to use 14 bit conversion, which may account for some of the image improvement we are seeing. We also have been very pleased to see that the Nikon CP 5400 with some high end ED glass elements in its lens is showing no purple fringing (so far), something the Canon G5 has shown a bit more of an issue with and also the Sony V1 has shown some too. We also like the somewhat unique feature that the Nikon CP 5400 offers, and that is the 4X zoom lens starts at a nice 28mm wide angle (the G5 and V1 also have 4X zoom lenses but require add-on lens to get wider angles). Well, come see for yourself.

YOSEMITE MINOLTA Xi & NOVATIX SENDPHOTOS GOLD SAMPLE HTML PAGE POSTED (07/05/03)
We have posted a sample HTML web page made using the new Novatix SENDPHOTOS GOLD software program. The HTML page generator is a new feature in this latest improved version of SENDPHOTOS by Novatix. The pictures we have used in this sample are some nice shots we obtained from our trip two weeks ago to Yosemite, California. Unfortunately Sony needed the V1 back just before we left, the Nikon 5400 was not quite ready for shipping to us for review, and our Canon 10D is being used on other projects. However we did just fine with the sub-compact Minolta Xi 3 megapixel camera. We actually appreciated more than we thought at first the small take-anywhere size and ease of use of the Minolta Xi as we hiked up steep trails for hours, with the tiny camera clipped to a belt and stored inside a small leather case where we also kept a spare battery and memory card. Once we got back, we had over 200 shots to go through, and yet with the Novatix SENDPHOTOS GOLD software we were able to quickly see all shots as thumbnails, put check marks by a dozen or so which we especially liked and then hit the button to make the e-mail and/or html pages as you see in our sample linked below. The program offers dozens and dozens of frames, templates, color combinations, layouts, abilities for captions, basic editing, cropping & sizing of images and more, which makes it very easy to come up with fun looking pages that show off your latest and greatest digital images, and most importantly to quickly and easily share them with others! For more information and to download the free trial version of SENDPHOTS GOLD, visit www.novatix.com. Stay tuned as our review of this software is coming up soon. If you own a digital camera, you should check out SENDPHOTOS GOLD, and also check out how well the Minolta Xi did in capturing some very pretty shots from one of our best National Parks, Yosemite!

SONY DSC-V1 CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE SAMPLES POSTED (07/04/03)
Several weeks ago we took the new Sony DSC-V1 5 megapixel camera out to Disney's California Adventure Theme Park in Anaheim, California for further testing of this great very compact camera. In response to our original Disneyland shots we read comments that the images were not quite as Saturated as Sony owners are familiar with. This was especially noticed in our shots from Disneyland, where they have purposely attempted to decorate the park in very bright colors for obvious reasons. However, Sony has apparently intentionally attempted to provide slightly less saturated default colors in the new full featured DSC V1, as they now have added a 3 level saturation control among other image controls which include sharpness and contrast. In an effort to demonstrate to potential Sony DSC-V1 buyers that the prior Sony color look can easily be obtained with just a few quick control setting changes, we took a large series of shots at California Adventure with the Saturation, Contrast and often the Sharpness controls at their highest settings. The results show that the Saturation setting can provide very vivid colors for those who prefer that look straight from the camera, and we also saw as we expected that using a -1/3 EV setting in bright outdoors will help expose the colors with a more saturated appearance. Something we did notice and wanted to comment on is the fact that the Sony DSC-V1 can occasionally choose in the Program mode to very slightly over-expose the image in bright sunshine conditions, and while this does help to keep noise levels down and keeps the image brighter looking, it can also add to the appearance that the color levels are slightly less saturated. We found that in very bright sunshine conditions use of the high Saturation levels without need for -1/3 EV worked well to produce the "Disney" color look many owners may want as an option. This may be especially helpful on those occasions when presumably many owners go on Vacation to sunny locations and they want more vivid colors straight from the camera. We did not feel that a higher contrast level was as important, and use of the high sharpness setting is really unnecessary as we feel Sony has this setting very high already in the default setting.
We have noticed some slight White Balance drifting, with occasional slight blue casts and on a few shots a yellow or warm shift, but this occurred in only about a dozen shots out of nearly 120 shots we took. In some instances it appeared the yellow cast may occur when we held the shutter down for a longer period to wait for crowds to move out of the picture or we may have done that, then let up on the shutter and quickly depressed it again once we saw the coast was clear. Most of you won't be shooting as we do to get these sample shots so it should not be a big factor, nor would our findings cause us any hesitation to still highly recommend the camera to those who want a very compact 5 megapixel camera that takes very sharp images. One other issue we wish to update is our findings on battery use. We initially reported that we only got just over 70 images on our initial use out at Disneyland. However, we had tested the camera for 10 mins several nights before the shoot, and we let the battery sit in the camera for days, which appears can draw the power down, without topping off the charge on the morning of our shoot. We also forgot to mention we took one 30 second movie on that first charge. When we went out to California Adventure we charged the camera that morning and we got well over 100 images and closer to 110, with heavy playback and screen usage. On subsequent shoots we found we could easily get over 100 shots per battery charge. Thus, we would still suggest all V1 owners get a second battery for backup since you cannot find a non-rechargeable version like you can with AA and several other battery types just about wherever you go, however we do want to correct our initial impressions as the battery does last much longer than we first reported. Overall, the Sony DSC-V1 is a very good performer, and this is especially true given its compact size, with 5 megapixel images that are incredibly sharp and nice looking straight out of the camera.
We have set up two thumbnail pages which allow you to click on the smaller images to then display a larger view. For those with dial-ups we have a page with 480 by 360 views and those who can wait or have a faster connection we have a page with links to images resized at 1024 by 768. Other than resizing and giving a slight sharpening, the images have not been altered in any way. We will post links to some if not all the full sized images, however there are 48 shots here, so in an effort to conserve space we may not post them all, as they are over 2 megs each (The Disneyland Original Unaltered Full Sized Images are available at the Disneyland Index link below). As always, we think these samples will be helpful to show you the real world results you can get from the Sony V1!
